Safety Team Volunteer  Get Connected Icon

Description

Assist staff in running security checkpoints, performing searches for weapons and controlled substances, providing needed resources to clients, and facilitating mealtimes.

Training:

Safety volunteers are paired with a staff member throughout their shift and trained on the following: 

  • Shelter safety standards
  • 2-way radio usage
  • Metal detector wand
  • Contacting emergency services
  • Performing security checks
  • Items not allowed in the shelter
  • Available client resources

Qualifications:

  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • De-escalation experience (preferred)
  • Pass background check

Please note: This position may place you in proximity to controlled substances, weapons, and individuals experiencing mental health and substance abuse disorders.

We have a new gate at our south entrance on our main campus!  As you pull up to the gate, push the intercom button on the call box to tell a staff member your name.  If no one answers, use the Adult Shelter on-call phone number (509-480-9949) posted near the intercom.  It will take a moment to verify your volunteer account, and then you will be buzzed in.
