The temps are so cold that an emergency declaration from the City allowed a pop-up shelter to open last night at St. Michael's church. There were 28 guests and five cases of mild to moderate frostbite. No fights, no issues.
Tonight we expect that need to increase as people on the street hear about places to get warm. So, as an emergency measure, YUGM will be opening additional space in the Good News Cafe to accommodate more people. We are currently at capacity of 127. We still have the ability to sleep an additional 40 people by opening the dining room space.
HERE IS HOW YOU CAN HELP:
We need an additional 3 people (men and women) who can help supervise the shelter spaces overnight.
- 11:00PM - 7:30AM we need 1-2 extra people (2 preferred) for supervision and assisting with transition in the morning.
- 7:30PM-8:30PM we need 1 person to convert GNC in the PM (setting out mats)
None if this is normal, but this is an emergency situation that allows us one more way to live out the Gospel of grace in Christ!
Client facing experience preferred, but not required!
Parking Instructions:
As you pull up to the gate at the South entrance, push the intercom button on the call box to get ahold of a staff member. If you need help getting ahold of a staff member, call the Adult Shelter on-call phone number (509-853-4343) posted near the intercom. After the gate opens, you can pull through, park, and walk back through the pedestrian gate to get to the back kitchen entrance and use the kitchen doorbell (do not use the call box). After your shift, please exit through the double doors (west of the kitchen) to get back to your car.
